ARTESA TEMPRANILLO RESERVE

2004 Alexander Valley
This wine is deep purple color with a garnet edge. It has an aromatic nose of violets, smoky blackberry, and toasty oak, with hints of leather and spice. On the palate it is nicely balanced - medium to full-bodied, with decent acidity and supple tannins. The flavors stay big on blackberry, with some cherry/raspberry and plum, and accents of smoke, leather, white pepper, and cocao. The tannins and toasty oak become more prominent in the berry fruit-driven, long and clean finish.

This wine was $25 at the winery, and is a pretty fair deal at that price. A little one-note on the blackberry fruit, but a fine blackberry note at that, with the smoke, leather, spice, oak, and other hints present enough to add interest. The balance and fine, youthful tannins helped the wine cozy up nicely to a pan-seared sirloin with a Dijon-lemon-garlic sauce. A great steak wine, with some definite echoes of a modern-style Rioja.
