Superstition is a blend from the excellent range of whisky that comes from the Isle of Jura. It is a small place - just 7x30 miles, beside the Isle of Islay to the southwest of Scotland. On the island there is but one hotel, one road and one distillery. Superstition is blended from a select range of the other well-known Jura products - Origin, Diurach's Own and Prophecy. On the Superstition bottle you will notice the Ankh Cross. This symbol is said to date back to Egyptian times and is rumored to bring good fortune, but only if you pour the whisky while holding the cross in the center of your palm. Jura Superstition is less smoky than many Scotch bottles but still evokes the peat bogs, offset by flavors of honey, spice and pine. As with most Scotch distilleries, there is a long history to this one. It is said that an illegal still was set up on the island in the early 1800s in defiance of a ban on whisky drinking. It was popular for a time but later fell into disrepair until two locals - Robin Fletcher and Tony Riley-Smith - decided a distillery would be a good way to attract people to the island. By 1963 their work was complete and the distillery is now the lifeblood of the island.
